Looking after a happy hamster

Updated: Jun 5, 2022

Hamsters may seem cute and fluffy, but they need a lot of care. If you think as a human being, we need warmth, shelter, food, stimulant and comfort. Well a hamster also needs these things.

There are 6 main rules when it comes to looking after a hamster.

  1. Suitably sized cage and wheel

  2. The correct diet

  3. Enrichment

  4. Gnaw/chew toys

  5. Cleaning

  6. Socialising/handling.

If all these 6 things are met, then you will have a relatively happy hamster.

If you want to take it up to the next level, then I suggest you do these things.

Hamsters love carrots. They will do anything for them. Giving them as a treat will be a healthy way to help the bonding process with your hamster. It is also a source of water.

Stroking your hamster down their spine will also help to show your love and affection to them. They will slowly learn that you are there to look after them and not hurt them.

Getting them out of their cage a few times a week will give them a change of scenery. It also gives them a chance to play in their play pen or exercise ball.

Move things around in their cage. In the wild things are not always going to be in the same place. They will be constantly moving and changing. So if you redecorate their cage every now and then, you will be helping to promote natural behaviours and environments.

Hamsters have a great and very cute way of showing you that they are happy and content. If you see your hamster stretching a lot when they are within your company, then they are very happy. If you see them yawning while they are stretching, then that is a major bonus.
